Douglas LeRoy Thomas, 74, died on Monday, Sept. 16, 2019, at Cleveland Life Care Center, where he had resided in recent years.
After graduation from College Hill High School, he attended Barber School in Paducah, Ky. Douglas returned to Cleveland and worked side by side with his father, Howard, in the Thomas Barber Shop for several years.
He severed three years in the US. Army. He was stationed in Germany, where he worked as a cryptographer, quietly decoding top secret messages sent from the U.S. to European bases.
After returning home to Cleveland, he worked at the Magic Chef manufacturing company, until his retirement.
Douglas had a beautiful baritone voice and sung in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Male Choir.
Douglas (Doug as he was called) entered a sweet rest in the arms of Jesus early Monday morning, Sept. 16, 2019.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Annie Thomas; brother, James Thomas; sisters, Margaret Thomas and Flora Young; and his beloved wife, Barbara Ware Thomas.
He leaves to cherish his memories, five sons: Daniel Thomas, Gabriel (Sashual) Thomas, Ryan (Dannielle) Ware, Bryan Ware, and David (Octavia) Ware Jr.; one daughter, Lucretia (Paul) Montgomery; 13 grandchildren: Andrew Torres, Daniel Thomas Jr, Mehgan Thomas, Kortney Thomas, JoRell Thomas, and Hezekiah Thomas, Mikaesha, Malik and Paul Jr. Montgomery, Shaqua Cobb, TyQ'won Ware, Dajour and NyiaWare, all of Cleveland; one brother, David Thomas of Cleveland; one sister, Nina (Keith) Elliott of Knoxville; five nieces: Wendy Whaley of Knoxville, Alesia Massey of Nashville, Dena (Mikel) Brown, Davonda Thomas of Marietta, Ga., and Christina (Milton) Campbell; and one nephew, Keith (Grace) Elliott Jr. Of Pa.
The body may be viewed at Patton Funeral Home Chapel, 265 Fair Street S.E. Saturday, from 12 noon until 6 p.m.
The family will receive friends from 1 until the 2 p.m. service time Sunday, Sept. 22, 2019, at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 799 East Inman St. The Rev. Edward S. Robinson Sr. is pastor. The Rev. Dr. Keith Elliott Sr. will be the eulogist.
Interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. The service will conclude with a dove release.
