Alonzo Montgomery Obituary


Alonzo T. Montgomery Sr. was born July 28, 1957 at UT Hospital in Knoxville, TN.

He departed this life on June 17, 2021 at Fort Sanders Regional Hospital in Knoxville, TN.

He attended Vine Junior High School and Austin East High School graduating in 1976 before enlisting the United States Army.  While serving, he rose through the ranks and ultimately retired in 1995 after 17 years of active duty.

Alonzo was a believer in Christ and a family man who loved his children dearly. To know him was to love him. He never missed an opportunity to help someone in need. He always put others first.  Alonzo had a servant’s heart! 

He was also very active in local politics, ministry and fitness. 

He was preceded in death by his Dad and Mom, Kenneth and Vera Mae Montgomery Moore; aunt, Lonnie (Isaiah “Zeke”) Hoskey and uncle, James Moore.

He leaves to mourn his passing: three children, Wachovia “Koko” Taylor, Alonzo T. “Flip” Montgomery Jr., and Ruth “Ruthie” (Terrence) Lyons; 15 grandchildren, La’Tyce, Desiree, Jada, Dezsie, Daevon, Daylan, Armani, Brandynn, Eli, Kovi, Alonzo Jr., Alonda, Zomaria, Caprice, and Fatima, and 4 great grandchildren; sister, Karen “Renee” (Gary ) Bragg; niece, Stephanie Montgomery; nephew, Gary Bragg Jr.; father, Pete Drew; several brothers and sisters; aunts, Mary (Melvin) Tate, Earnestine Williams, Liz Humphrey, Denise Smith, Sharon Moore; uncles, Kenneth (Vivian) Smith, Phillip Smith, Jeffery and Ulysses Moore; good friends, Karen Hill, Rick Lay and Charlene Patrick.


Wednesday, June 30, 2021, a public walkthrough is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Payne Avenue Baptist Church, 2714 Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, Knoxville TN.  Social distancing and face coverings are required.  A funeral service to follow for immediate family and close friends.  Bishop Kevin A. Perry is the eulogist.  Interment at East TN Veterans Cemetery, 2200 Gov. John Sevier Highway, Knoxville, TN, where military honors and a white dove release will conclude the service.  Flowers may be delivered to the church the morning of the walkthrough.  Professional arrangements entrusted to Patton Funeral Home, Brian L.
