Essie Lee Steele, born on March 22, 1928, lived a life marked by love, dedication, and service, passing away surrounded by the warmth of her family's affection. Her journey began as the cherished daughter of Mr. Hoyt D. Hill and Mrs. Essie M. Hill ; children Willie J. Steele, Jr. and Rhonda L. Steele; ex-husband and children’s father Willie J. Steele; brother James C. Molone, preceded her in death.

Essie's legacy is carried forward by her loving children: daughters Zandra C. Wilkins, Wylma J. Caslin, and Rethea M. (Robert) Woods; her grandchildren Rekitta M. (Curtis) Wilkerson, R. Eugene Cross II, Robert J. Woods, O'Kitta M. Elliot, and Rhea M. Woods; and her adored great-grandchildren Amayah Wilkerson, Curtis Wilkerson III, and Eli Elliot. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Jacqueline Molone of Long Island, New York.

Essie was known to her friends, grandchildren, great-grandchildren as "Ester-Bell". 

A lifelong member of the New Monumental Baptist Church, Essie was deeply rooted in her faith community. She was a chartered member of the Progressive Minister and served with grace and commitment as an usher, a role in which she was held in the highest regard by her peers. Her unwavering faith and devotion to her church family were evident in her active participation and the loving relationships she built within the congregation.

Essie's professional life was as impactful as her spiritual one. She retired from the Hamilton County School System, where she served as a Social Worker, touching the lives of countless students and families with her empathy and unwavering support. Her work extended far beyond the confines of her job, as she was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.

An exceptionally talented seamstress and crocheter, Essie's creative gifts were a source of joy for many. She lovingly crafted beautiful outfits for her daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, and friends, each piece a testament to her skill and affection.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the members of the Progressive Minister, including Sarah Cook, Essie's longtime friend, Lacie Cousin, Lillie Sims, Grace Ragland, and all other current members, for their support and fellowship over the years. A special acknowledgment is given to Virginia Scaife, with whom she shared a deep bond through their service on the usher board.

Gratitude is also extended to Emery Cooper and family, Kimberly Morgan, Saterria Skrine, and Carolyn Smith for their unwavering support and kindness. The families of Darlene Sidney, Sharon Daniels, Valeria Traylor of Chattanooga, TN, and Marva McGee have also been pillars of strength and comfort. Essie's nephews, Jimmy Molone and Patrick Malone and their families from New York, have been a source of love and joy throughout her life. Longtime friends Norman Jean Blebins, Betty Williams, and JoAnn Speres have been treasured companions on her life's journey.

The family is truly grateful for the spiritual guidance and support provided by Rev. Gregory Odom of New Monumental Baptist Church and Rev. Kenneth Scaife, who have been steadfast in their care and ministry.

Essie Lee Steele's life was a tapestry of love, service, and community. Her memory will be cherished, and her spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have felt the warmth of her presence. Her family and a host of friends will forever hold dear the time they shared with this remarkable woman.
