Howard Sterling Hensley, age 62, of Knoxville, departed this life on Saturday, October 16, 2021. He was born on October 25, 1958 in Lafollette, TN to Clarence and Daisy Hensley. Howard graduated from Fulton High School and Alabama A &M University. He retired from Austin East High School in 2017, as a Vocational teacher and coach. He had a vivid love for music, politics and making others laugh. His robust heart was contagious to all that were around him. This was truly his special gift that enhanced the lives of numerous people along his life’s journey.
Preceded in death by parents, Clarence W. Hensley and Daisy Hensley Tate; brother, Danny Hensley; grandmother, Elsie Osborne Lowery; uncles and aunts, Tommy Lowery, James Lowery and Mary (Clarence Jr.) Allen.
He was a member of Oak Grove A.M.E. Zion Church.
He leaves to cherish his memory, best friend and loving wife of 33 years, Sherry Brown Hensley; daughter, Alexandra Camille Barnette; devoted sons, Howard Sterling Hensley, II and Hakeem Shaquille Hensley and granddaughter, Madeline Bree Chari; brother, Jeffery (Yvonne) Hensley; sisters, Diane L. Griffin, Talitha Jackson and Pamela Hensley (Ocean Springs, Mississippi); uncle, Clarence Lowery (Biloxi, Mississippi); cousins, D. Anthony (Sandra) Allen, Janet (Jarman) Watts and Talitha Kennedy Walker; sister-in-law, Shelia Hensley (Las Vegas, Nevada); brothers-in-law, Douglas (Patricia) Frazier, Jeffery and Courtney Brown and Michael Rodgers; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and devoted friends.
Monday, October 25, 2021, a public walkthrough is scheduled from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Greater Warner Tabernacle A.M.E. Zion Church, 3800 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave, Knoxville, TN 37914. Social distancing and face coverings are required. A funeral service will follow with Rev. Tiki Dixson officiating. Interment at Lynnhurst Cemetery, 2300 Adair Drive, Knoxville, TN 37918, where a white dove release will conclude the service. Flowers may be delivered to the church the morning of the walkthrough.
