Joey Leon Smith, Sr., passed away in Knoxville, TN, leaving a legacy of love, laughter, and leadership. Born on May 30, 1969, Joey's vibrant spirit and infectious smile made a lasting impression on everyone he met throughout his 54 years of life.
A proud graduate of the Class of 1987 from Austin-East High School, Joey's academic journey led him to the University of Louisville, where he not only pursued his education but also shone as a football player. His passion for the game was evident as he played with heart and skill, eventually leading him to a professional career with the New York Giants for four years. Joey's love for football never waned, and after his time in the NFL, he dedicated his life to coaching, shaping the lives of countless young athletes. His impressive career included roles as a Defensive Coordinator for the Jacksonville Sharks, a committed Football Coach at East Stroudsburg University for 14 years, and a Defensive Coordinator for the Brooklyn Bolts.
Joey continued his pursuit of knowledge, receiving his BA degree from the University of Louisville, followed by an MS and a DBA from Walden University. He applied his intellect both on and off the field, becoming a mentor to many young boys, guiding them not only in football but in life. His ability to make everyone laugh, his knack for fixing almost anything, and his defense of the underdog were just a few of the qualities that made Joey a unique and beloved figure in his community.
Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Emma & George Walker and Vera & Joseph Smith, Sr.; aunt Sandra Maloney; and uncles Charles & Clifford Smith.
His family was the cornerstone of his life. Joey leaves behind his devoted parents, Rev. Dr. Joseph B. Smith, Jr. and Minister Mildred Smith; wife, Maegan; sons, Joey, Jr. (Kierra), Savon (stepson), Dontae, and Mariano; daughters, Jalisha, Aryana (stepdaughter), Zyia, Zoi, Z'Amiyah, and Za'Riyah; siblings, Melanie (Anthony) Talton, Retecka (Shawn) Bright, Jedidiah Smith Sr., and Michelle (Joe) Smith; grandfather to Daylen and Kai'Lani and a caring uncle to Cyncerati, Kearstin, Journey, Jasity, Kimani (Erica), Jabari, Jedidiah Jr. Kaden, and Kamari.
Joey will also be remembered by his aunts Rosa Farmer, Bettye Fuller, and Stella Butts; uncle, Richard Walker; devoted friends, Mossy Taylor, Johnetta Fenderson, William Blackford, Rhonyia Quick, and Tommy Moore.Numerous cousins & extended family and friends to include the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc and 1987 Class of Austin-East High School.
