Jovetta Rowan McDowell Obituary
Jovetta L. Rowan-McDowell, affectionately known as "Jody" by her loved ones, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2024, at the age of 58. Born on March 27, 1966, in Pontiac, Michigan, she was the daughter of Gretta Johnson Brown and Hubert Jones, and was later lovingly adopted by Jimmie and Bessie Rowan. Jody's radiant spirit and boundless enthusiasm for life left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Jody grew up in a home filled with love and was nurtured by both her birth and adoptive families. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gretta Johnson Brown and Hubert Jones, her adoptive parents, Jimmie and Bessie Rowan, her brother William Brown III, her grandparents Lee A. Johnson and Lilliam Johnson, and her grandmother Pauline Johnson. Each of them played a significant role in her life and helped shape the extraordinary woman she became.
A proud graduate of Holston High School's Class of 1984, Jody continued her education at The University of Tennessee, where she immersed herself in the vibrant campus life. While her academic pursuits were important, she found her true passion in the arts. She was known for her eloquent spoken word performances, her love for poetry, and her appreciation for classical music. These interests were more than hobbies; they were the expressions of her soul.
Jody was also known for her culinary talents, particularly her baking, which brought joy to many gatherings. Her gardens were a testament to her patience and dedication, as she cultivated beauty and tranquility in her little corner of the world. These simple pleasures were a reflection of her approach to life—finding joy in creation and sharing it generously with others.
Beyond her creative endeavors, Joy was deeply committed to her family, friends, and community. She is survived by her brother, Maurice (Beverly) Brown; sister Arica Rowan; her aunt, Beverly Johnson; her uncles, Jeffery and Aaron Johnson; her nieces, Lillian Brown, Jasmine, and I'yonna Rowan; her nephews, Clark Love, Courey Rowan, and Lotronis Rowan; and a host of cousins, family, and friends who will miss her dearly.
Special thanks are extended to Jody's lifelong friends Lynn Right and Hazel Leverett, who were like sisters to her, and to Robbin Cinquino for unwavering support. The community at Westview Tower provided a network of friendship and care that enriched her life. Moreover, her Church Family at New Covenant Baptist Church played a pivotal role in her spiritual journey, offering a foundation of faith and fellowship that was central to her existence.
