Celebration of Life Memorial

Joyce Marie Evans Cowan

Mrs. Joyce Marie Evans Cowan was born February 16, 1944 in Cleveland, TN.  She transitioned from this life on Friday the 4th of August at Avail Senior Living in Cleveland, TN.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Cowan, her mother Matilda Evans, her father William Evans Sr., her biological father Charles Smith, her brothers Sgt. Major Charles Evans Sr., William Evans Jr., her sister Janet Evans Blair, and her brother-in-law David Blair.

Joyce received her early education from College Hill School graduating in 1961. Through continued education, Joyce received her nursing license and began her nursing career working in various hospitals throughout the Cleveland, TN and Chattanooga, TN area.  Her immense medical knowledge, dedication and professionalism would lead her to being an invaluable member of the Associates in Ear, Nose, Throat/Head & Neck Surgery staff in Chattanooga, TN.  Joyce was a dedicated nurse for over 40 years.

Joyce was a long-time resident of Chattanooga, Tennessee.  She loved good food, socializing, gardening, traveling, and other activities with family and friends.  She had a wonderful smile that could light up a room.  She loved her family immensely and was often their personnel gourmet chef as she was renowned for her cooking and baking skills. Joyce was a member of Murry Hill Garden Club and the Ebony Social Club.  She served her community through various civic duties and charitable organizations throughout her lifetime.   Joyce was a wonderful woman that was loved, and will always be cherished. She was an amazing wife, sister, aunt and friend who will forever be dearly missed.

Joyce is survived by her sisters, Billie Blair of Cleveland, TN, Nancy Ware of Broken Arrow, OK, Sally Chaney (Keith) of Tulsa, OK; care giver and niece, Kemi Evans of Huntsville, AL; sister-in-laws, Eula Evans of Huntsville, AL, Mildred Simmons of Chicago, IL and Maxine Dossett of Chattanooga, TN, her stepchildren, Adam Cowan of Chattanooga Tn, Allison Carol (Jaroy), and two adorable granddaughters Addison and Avery Carol; of Smyrna, Ga. Several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and other family members who brought great joy to her life.

It would be wrong to say that Joyce lost her battle because she never stopped fighting. No matter how ill she was, she was always determined. When anyone else would have broken, she stayed strong. Through her, we know what resilience and perseverance truly look like. There was no quit in Joyce. Just because she is no longer here, it doesn’t mean she lost her fight.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023, starting at 3:00 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 799 Inman Street N.E., Cleveland, Tn. 37311. Rev. Edward S. Robinson, Sr. Pastor.
