Juanita Hawkins Obituary


Juanita Spratling Hawkins, the daughter of the late Emmett Mahone and Sarah Mae Spratling Barnett was born on February 21, 1955, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Juanita went home to be with the Lord on August 9, 2022.
Having grown up in the Scarboro community, she attended the Scarboro Elementary, Jefferson Junior High, and is a 1973 graduate of Oak Ridge High. After graduation, she attended Berea College and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1977. Soon after graduation, she relocated to Detroit, Michigan. She went on to receive her Masters at Central Michigan in June 1999.
Juanita accepted Christ at an early age and was former member of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Oak Ridge, under the pastorate of the late Rev. C. C. Fuller. She served in several capacities, but she loved teaching Sunday School.
She was united in holy marriage to Norman Hawkins, whom she affectionately called “Honey”, on September 1, 1982. They were together for 38 years until his passing in September of 2021.
Juanita was an active member of Word of Faith Christian Center in Southfield, Michigan. She loved the Lord regularly attending “United Conference of Women” Christian conferences in various cities, and Rev. Gloria Pruitt’s “Relaxing with Jesus” weekend conferences, among others.


She worked for various companies, the last was with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan/Blue Care Network, where she worked there in various positions including, Grievance Coordinator and Business Administration until her early retirement in June of 2014.
She enjoyed traveling throughout the country with her long-time friend Belinda. Her last know trip was to the island of Maui in Hawaii.
Juanita was a fashionista who loved to dress, especially in her favorite color “purple “.


Along with her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her grandmothers, Lila Ripley and Kate Shepherd, her uncles, Overton, Robert Charles, and Lewis Spratling, Larry and Dennis Shepherd, and her sister, Mary Lee Barnett, cousin, Jennifer Spratling, and brother-in-law, Lincoln Ross.


She leaves to cherish her memory, her brother Kenneth Spratling, sisters Janice Spratling and Gwendolyn Ross; nieces, Gwenicka (Larry) Holmes and Satarah Schofield; nephews, Kenneth and Omar Spratling; uncle, Rufus (Georgia) Shepherd; aunts, Mary Bohanon and Linda Williams; cousins, Anthony (Gloria) Spratling, Shirley Guinn, Deborah Long, Johnny (Lori) Spratling, Christopher Spratling; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Thursday, August 18, 2022, family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 195 Wilberforce Avenue, Oak Ridge, TN. A funeral service will follow with Elder D.W. Waters as the eulogist. Interment will immediately follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park, where a white dove release will conclude the service.
