In the summer of 1967, Leroy enlisted in the United States Army. Following a brief return home, Leroy was deployed to Vietnam in February 1969, where he served with the 557th Military Police Company. During his service, he patrolled cities, surrounding villages, and townships. Leroy often spoke of how grateful and blessed he was to have returned from Vietnam alive and unharmed.
