Clarence C. Hinton Jr. devoted husband, father, and grandfather entered eternal rest on February 24, 2025. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family, friends, and the gift of grace, love, and comfort of the Lord.
Clarence C. Hinton Jr. was born in Norfolk, VA, to the late Clarence C. Hinton and Tillie Fuller Hinton. Clarence was an active member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Oak Ridge, TN, in which he was a loyal servant of the Lord. He served as an usher, Sunday school teacher for middle aged men and was ordained as a Deacon in 2010 under the pastoral leadership of Elder T.L. Mims.
Clarence graduated from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA, where he received a Master’s Degree in Economics in 1975. He also attended Hampton Institute (University) where he lettered in football as a lineman all four years and pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in 1965. Clarence graduated from Hampton University in 1967 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Math and a minor in Physics. While at Hampton, he was in ROTC as a distinguished Cadet Commander. He began the next chapter of his life by joining the military. Clarence was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 82nd ABN Division. He was stationed in South Korea; Ft. Bennington, GA; the Pentagon in DC; and fought in the Vietnam war. While serving in the U.S. Army, Clarence received several awards during his 23 years of service which includes the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign and Civil Actions Medal, Legion of Merit Award, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Ribbon, 4th Infantry Division Combat Service Identification Badge, and the Parachute Badge. In 1990, Clarence retired from the Armed Forces ranked as a Lieutenant Colonel.
After his military career, Clarence moved to Oak Ridge, TN, to start another chapter of his life. Employed by Martin Marietta at the Y-12 Plant, Clarence held several positions including Business Analyst, Business Manager, Financial Manager, and Standards/Requirements Identification Documents Manager. Before retiring in 2018, Clarence held the position of Company Procedures Manager for Consolidated Nuclear Security (Y-12/Pantex).
Enjoying life after retirement, Clarence loved vacationing, playing golf, watching MSNBC and sports, and traveling to his son’s house to spend quality time with his grandchildren. When watching sports, he enjoyed cheering on his favorite teams the Cleveland Browns and the Tennessee Volunteers while occasionally indulging in Krispy Kreme original donuts and Starbucks coffee.
Clarence is survived by his loving wife Brenda J. Hinton, Acworth, GA; his son Clarence C. Hinton III (Jana) Westin, MA; daughter Bosha N. Cusack (Tim) Kennesaw, GA; and son Marcus R. Ashford (Ashley) Alpharetta, GA.
Grandchildren Jacey L. Hinton, Chase C. Hinton, Sloan B. Hinton, Chance C. Hinton, Makiah C. Ashford, Miracle R. Ashford, Melody R. Ashford, and Marley R. Ashford.
Clarence is also survived by his longtime friend John Franklin (Marie) Loudon, TN, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, friends, and his Omega Psi Phi fraternity brothers “THE TRULY GREAT EIGHT” the line he pledged.
