Lowell Eugene Matthews Sr. was born on May 27, 1926, in Atlanta, Georgia to William and Ocie Lee Hunter Matthews. Lowell relocated to Knoxville, Tennessee in his youth.

Lowell was an Army veteran and an elder in his church. He had a sweet tooth and enjoyed watching cowboy shows on TV. His nieces and nephews affectionately referred to him as "Uncle," while his step-grandchildren called him "Granddaddy." Lowell was greatly cherished by his loved ones.

Lowell was preceded in death by wife: Thelma P. Matthews, son: Lowell E. Matthews Jr.,Brothers: Homer, Robert, and James Matthews, Sisters: Rubye Matthews, and Anita M. Drake, Sister-in-law: Geraldine Matthews, Stepdaughter: Sadia Straton, Nieces: Elizabeth Matthews, Harriet M. Jenkins, and Audrey M. Andrews, Nephews: James Matthews, and Gerald Matthews. and 4 Great Nephews.

Lowell E. Matthews leaves to cherish his memory daughter: Ann Davis, of Gary, IN: Nieces: Joyce D. (caregiver) Guinn, and Linda M. Brabson, both of Knoxville, TN, Sheila M. Phillips, of Chattanooga, TN, Gail D. Cole, Miriam Aston Samson, Kathleen, Kathrine, and Rebecca King, all of Atlanta, GA. Nephews: Robert (Jewell) Matthews, of Knoxville, TN, and Charles (Patricia) Matthews, of Chattanooga, TN. A host of grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-nieces andnephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
