Pauline Virginia Smith, affectionately known as Polly, was born in Cleveland, TN on December 13, 1933 to the late John Henry Bacon Sr. and Grover Gladys Howie Bacon.  A beacon of love and faith in her community, Polly passed away peacefully on July 7, 2024, at the age of 90.

Polly found love and married Charles Ray Smith Sr. on April 2, 1960.  They were united in marriage until her husband’s passing in 2006.

Polly professed hope in Christ at an early age and joined Price Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church where she was a faithful servant her entire life.  Polly’s life was marked by her love for her family and her deep faith which she expressed through active participation in her church and community.  Her commitment to these values brought joy and comfort not only to her life but also to those around her.

Polly graduated from College Hill High School in Cleveland, TN, where she formed many friendships and memories that lasted throughout her life.  Following her studies, she worked various jobs until she began a dedicated career at Duracell where she worked for over 30 years.  Even after retirement, she remained an active and cherished member of the community, often found at the heart of church activities and social gatherings.

She is preceded in death by her husband Charles Ray Smith Sr., brothers John Henry Jr., George, William T. and James Bacon, and sisters Josephine Billingsley and Charlene Snell, and niece Deborah Blair. 

Those left to honor and treasure her memory are her children: Sherry Hooker, Tony (Renee) Bacon, Earl Smith, Charles “Buster” Smith, Anna (LaRanze) Broomfield, and Paul Smith Sr.   Grandchildren: Angela Young, Sharon McFeders, Kevin Hooker, Kimberly (Andrew) Arkley, Jamaal (Erika) Bacon, Sharyse (Edward) Griffin, Tia Bacon, Pamela Marie Sanchez, Chiquila Snowden, Adriel (Shernita) Snowden, Paul Smith Jr. and Amarionna Smith; twenty-five great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Polly, who could light up a room with her beautiful smile and kindness and love, will be fondly remembered and truly missed by all.
