Roger Miles Jackson, Jr Obituary

Roger Miles Jackson Jr., a cherished educator, artist, and loving family man, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2024, at the age of 86. Born on September 27, 1937, Roger's life was marked by his dedication to  education and the arts.

Embracing his faith early in life, Roger became a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church. His formative years were spent in the Knox County School System, culminating in his graduation from Austin High School in 1956. Roger's passion for art led him to pursue higher education in this field, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education from The Art Institute of Chicago in 1961. His commitment to educating young minds was evident as he began his teaching career in the school systems of Hammond, Gary, and Chicago.

In 1969, Roger's academic achievements continued with a Master’s Degree in Art Education from the Chicago Institute of Design. With this accomplishment, he ventured to the US Virgin Islands, contributing his expertise to the St Thomas-St John School District. However, the pull of his hometown was strong, and in 1971, Roger, along with his family, returned to Knoxville. It was there that he embarked on a distinguished 30-year career in Art Education with the Knox County School System, leaving a lasting impact on countless students before retiring from West High School in 2001.

Roger's life was not solely defined by his professional accomplishments but also by his love for simple pleasures. He was an avid creator, finding solace and joy in his art. Jazz music filled his home, the smooth melodies a backdrop to his days. The golf course was his sanctuary, where he enjoyed the camaraderie of friends and the challenge of the game.

Roger's legacy is carried on through his beloved family. He is survived by his devoted son, Roger Miles Jackson III (Tamatha), and his caring daughter, Mirhonda Mayo (Mark). His joy was multiplied by his five grandchildren, Jaylon, Mackenzie, Jackson, Chesney, and Mylah, who will miss their grandfather's guidance and love. Roger's sister, Geraldine Taylor (Stanley), and brother, Dr. Herman E. Jackson (Frankie), will remember their brother with fondness and pride. His nieces, Deborah Nelson (Glyn), Lisa Johnson (Paul), and Traci Cash (Sean), along with Tricia Lakes (Alexander), and nephews, Stanley Madden (Kay) and Rodney Madden, are among the many relatives and friends who will cherish his memory.
