Ronald Bryan Martin Obituary
Ronald B. Martin
(“Big O,” “Coach Ron,” and “Gee-Gee” to his grandsons)
Ronald B. Martin, age 72, passed away peacefully on November 4th at Ben Atchley Veterans Home in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Born and raised in Knoxville, Ronald was a proud graduate of Austin-East High School, Class of 1972, and later attended Roane State Community College. Afterward, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served his country with pride and dedication.
Ronald was employed by Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) for 30 years before retiring. Never one to sit still, he continued serving his community through Mobile Meals, delivering food and friendship.
A lifelong sports fan and loyal Dallas Cowboys supporter, Ronald’s greatest joy came from cheering on his grandsons at their games. He loved walking his wife’s dog, Shadow, all over the city.
Ronald was a faithful member of Tabernacle Baptist Church for over 60 years. He served dutifully on the Usher Board and as a church van driver
He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Gwendolyn Joyce Martin; daughters, Terreka (Derrick) Smith and RonShea Martin; grandsons, Penny, Rondhea, and Chaston; sister, Sonja Johnson of San Francisco, California; and niece, Denise Atkins (Khiry and Jamar).
Ronald was preceded in death by his parents, Nola and Rudy Atkins; brother, Pete (Frankie) Atkins; sister, Yvonne McClellan; and nephew, Malik Johnson.
He will also be deeply missed by his special cousins Raleigh Wynn Jr. and the Wynn family, Bettye Jo Brackin and family, the Holloway family; lifelong friend Calvin Schofield and Jeffery Minor; his Mets softball teammates; the Austin-East Class of 1972; and a host of friends and loved ones too numerous to name.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Ben Atchley Veterans Home and Smoky Mountain Hospice Care for their exceptional compassion and support.
