Sergeant Major Willie Melton Hudson
Sergeant Major (Ret.) Willie Melton Hudson, a highly decorated U.S. Army veteran and beloved community leader, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2025, at the age of 82.
He was born on October 6, 1942, in Marengo County, Alabama, to parents Melton and Levarda Hudson. From an early age, Willie demonstrated the values of hard work, responsibility, and service that would come to define his life.
Growing up in Alabama, Willie spent much of his childhood helping his grandparents work the land, learning the importance of dedication and perseverance. Even as a young boy, he showed entrepreneurial spirit and initiative – he ran a local paper route and sold ice cream bars around his community. These humble beginnings on his family’s farm and small business ventures instilled in him a lifelong work ethic and a sense of independence.
As a young man, Willie briefly worked as a truck driver before answering a higher call to serve his country. In 1961, at just 18 years old, he enlisted in the United States Army, embarking on what would become a distinguished 30-year military career. Through courage, determination, and exemplary leadership, he rose through the ranks to attain the Army’s highest enlisted rank of Sergeant Major, a testament to his dedication and skill.
During his three decades of service, Sergeant Major Hudson completed two combat tours in Vietnam, where he served with honor and extraordinary bravery. He became one of the most highly decorated soldiers of his time, earning numerous medals and commendations. Among these were the Purple Heart, awarded for wounds he received in battle, and the Bronze Star for Valor, recognizing his heroism and exceptional service under fire. Hiscomrades remember him as a fearless soldier who led by example, always putting the mission and his fellow soldiers first.
In the later years of his military career, Willie continued not only to lead but also to educate. His final assignment before retirement was as an instructor of Military Science at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he trained and mentored ROTC cadets preparing to become the next generation of Army officers. Upon discovering that Knoxville College – a historically Black college in the community – lacked a similar military training program, he volunteered to teach there as well, extending his mentorship to students who would not otherwise have had access to military science courses. He poured his knowledge and experience into these young men and women, earning their respect and gratitude for his dedication.
After retiring from the Army in 1991, Willie transitioned to civilian life but never stopped serving others. He became the Head of Security at the Job Corps Center in Knoxville, helping ensure the safety and guidance of youth in the program. His commitment to supporting young people led him briefly to Detroit, Michigan, where he took on a similar security leadership role to assist another Job Corps center.
Ultimately, Willie returned to Knoxville and embarked on a new venture in the business world as the General Manager of a Schlotzsky’s Deli. In this role, he was known for his compassionate leadership and his willingness to give people a second chance – he often offered employment opportunities to individuals whom others might have overlooked. Willie’s employees and colleagues remember him as a fair, generous boss who treated everyone with dignity and encouraged them to reach their potential.
Equally important to Willie was his faith and his service to the church community. He was a devout Christian who put his beliefs into action. For years, he brought Communion to the
Willie’s devotion to family was the cornerstone of his life. He married the love of his life, Janice Hudson, and together they built a warm and loving blended family. He was the proud father of four children from a previous marriage – Melvin Hudson, Victor Hudson, Steven Hudson (and wife Faith), and Valeria Hudson Robinson – and with Janice he welcomed their daughter, Nikita Hudson. Willie also embraced Janice’s daughter, Octavia Rice, as his own, never drawing distinctions between his “step” children and biological children.
Throughout his long military career, which often took him across the country and overseas to places like Germany, Willie remained deeply committed to his family. He made every effort to stay connected with his children no matter the distance, demonstrating his love through frequent communication, reunions, and lessons he shared whenever he was home. In later years, he relished his role as a grandfather and great-grandfather, delighting in time spent with his grandchildren. He was known simply as “Papa,” and shared special moments like Saturday morning trips to the local dump, often followed by secret breakfast outings—cherished traditions that created lasting memories with his grandchildren.
Sergeant Major Hudson will be remembered for his steadfast dedication – both to his nation and to the people he loved. He lived a life of principle, defined by courage, honor, faith, and compassion, and he touched countless lives along the way. Friends and neighbors recall his generous heart and gentle sense of humor. Former soldiers and students speak of his firm leadership and the way he inspired them to be their best selves. His family will forever cherish the memory of a loving husband, father, and grandfather who led by example and always put others first.
Willie Melton Hudson’s legacy of service and love stands as an enduring inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
