William Virgil Curd, Sr., age 95, departed this earthly life on Friday, May 7, 2021, at his residence in Knoxville, Tennessee.
William Virgil Curd, Sr. entered this life on December 5, 1925. He was the youngest of six children born to the union of the late Fred and Lucy Curd.
Born in Pruden, Kentucky, he grew up in Harriman, Tennessee, and later moved to Oliver Springs, Tennessee, where he worked in the coal mines. Additionally, he was employed by Union Carbide, Knoxville Community Development Corporation (KCDC), Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), and retired from the Knoxville School System’s Maintenance Department. After retirement he worked for The Foster Grandparent Program.
He was a member of New Friendship Missionary Baptist Church of Knoxville. Until his declining health, he was very faithful and served as Chairman of the Trustee Board, Superintendent of Sunday School, Sunday School Teacher, Chairman of the Deacons, President of the Pastor’s Aid Committee, member of the Laymen’s Ministry, Janitor, Senior Choir, Male Chorus and attended weekly Bible Study.
Preceded in death by his wife, Wilma D. Cason Curd; children, Melvin and Eric Curd and Jeff Turner; grandchildren, Jawara Clark and Daron Goins and Anthony Kelley; brothers, Charles and Tommy Curd; and sisters, Lillian and Panella (Aunt Jackie) Curd Henry.
Left to cherish his memory: children, Barbara Gray of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Arendia Mitchell (of the home who cared for him), Dezmere (Ken) Gordon of Knoxville, Lisa (Lee) Steed of Chester, Virginia, William Curd, Jr. (Faye), Debra (Niecy), Shirley, and Jerry (LaTronda) Turner, and Katina (Mark) Watson all of Knoxville; step-children, Valeria Clark, Ronnie and Roy (Brenda) Mitchell, and Karen Douglas also of Knoxville; a very devoted sister, Clara Hall Hughes of Knoxville; sisters-in-law, Mildred Cason, Wilma Cason, and Wilhelmenia (Greg) Yarbrough; and a host ofother family and friends to include devoted caregiver, Shelton Jones.
Friday, May 21, 2021, a public walkthrough is scheduled from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at New Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 1933 Texas Avenue, Knoxville, TN. A service to follow for immediate family and close friends. Reverend Sanford Miller, Sr. is the eulogist. Social distancing and face coverings are required. Interment will follow at New Gray Cemetery, 2724 Western Avenue, Knoxville, TN where a white dove release will conclude the service.
