Yvonne Mims Obituary

Yvonne McCaskill Mims, a full life FULLY lived, made her peaceful transition to her heavenly home on November 28, 2022, at Park West Medical Center. Yvonne was born July 27, 1936 in Vaiden, Mississippi. She moved to Oak Ridge in 1948. She was a faithful member of Oak Valley Baptist Church.

In 1956 Mrs. Mims became the Associate Director of the Scarboro School Daycare Center. She became the new director in 1972 and spent five years, for a total of 21 years. She was hired by the City of Oak Ridge’s Recreation Department, worked for ten years, and then retired.

During the Civil Rights movement, she was a Freedom fighter. The courage it took to stand up and fight for what you believed in was the hallmark of her character. She continued her love and guidance of children in her community as a Campfire leader, surrogate mother, volunteer for Head Start, and former board member of Girls Inc. Yvonne helped shape many lives during her numerous years of community involvement and support of children. This will be one of her greatest legacies. She was so proud of the lives she touched and would celebrate their success in person or from afar; she loved seeing them win in life. We can only reiterate how much she loved her community and its children.

Yvonne loved education just like her mother and other family members. Being a lifelong learner, she appreciated the opportunities to stretch and grow at the following institutions: Morristown College, Maryville College, Peabody College, and Roane State Community College. These experiences broadened her horizon, inspired her, and enabled Yvonne to become an even better teacher for the children she served.

Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents, Mims McCaskill, and Sallie Ward McCaskill; brothers, Clarence M. McCaskill, Paul McCaskill, and John Griffin; sisters, Gladys Ward, Luzene Brownlee, her best friend/sister/cousin Alberta Hawthorne.

Left to treasure her memory are Steffany Stevens Thomas and Stanton Stevens, who she affectionally considered to be her children.
